Back to GatewayDesigned for 11th-grade students in the first semester and for 10th- and 11th-grade students in the second semester who have completed Biology I, this advanced elective moves beyond textbook learning. It introduces students to sophisticated molecular biology techniques while cultivating critical thinking, deductive reasoning, and advanced laboratory skills.

This semester, five students—Miguel Bukera Zueco, Kitty Lin, SunJae Ha, Audrey Pounds, and Alice Wang—participated in the program. Their experience culminated in an inspiring visit to the hospital’s state-of-the-art research laboratories, where they witnessed firsthand how molecular research contributes to medical and scientific advancement.
Throughout the course, students engaged in authentic laboratory investigations. Their work included DNA extraction, isolation of a plant-derived GAPC gene, cloning into a bacterial host, and sequence analysis using professional bioinformatics software. These are not simulations or simplified classroom exercises; they are foundational techniques used in contemporary biomedical research.
The elective provides a rare window into the molecular world, bridging secondary education with university-level scientific practice. Students not only deepen their conceptual understanding of genetics and molecular systems but also develop technical competence and confidence in a laboratory setting.
At the conclusion of the semester, participants presented their findings to the school community, demonstrating both their scientific growth and their enthusiasm for discovery.
As Audrey reflected,
“The molecular biology course allowed me to explore my passion for biology in a much more realistic and interesting way.”
Alice added,
“The molecular biology project really helped me get to know advanced lab tools and biological concepts. It will certainly help me in the future when learning more advanced biology.”
Programs like this exemplify St. Stephen’s commitment to experiential learning and academic rigor. By connecting students with leading researchers and authentic scientific environments, the Molecular Biology elective inspires curiosity, sharpens analytical skills, and prepares students for future study in the sciences.
