Community Gateway
Back to GatewayThis semester break, a group of boarders continued that tradition with a journey to Merano, embracing both adventure and renewal in one of northern Italy’s most picturesque alpine towns.

Surrounded by snow-capped mountains and crisp winter air, students stepped into a landscape that felt worlds away from the pace of Rome. Merano’s unique blend of Italian and Austrian heritage—visible in its architecture, cuisine, and culture—offered a rich backdrop for exploration.
Students wandered through local shops, enjoyed hearty alpine meals, and took in the calm beauty of the surrounding landscape.
But as with all boarding trips at St. Stephen’s, the experience was about more than the destination. It was about connection.

Trips like these create space for students to bond outside the classroom, strengthening friendships and building a sense of community that defines boarding life.
Whether walking through town together, sharing stories over dinner, or simply appreciating the stillness of the mountains, students experienced the kind of shared moments that stay with them long after graduation.

The Merano trip also offered an important pause. In the midst of a demanding academic year, students had the opportunity to reset, recharge, and return to campus refreshed and ready for the term ahead.
For over 60 years, boarding at St. Stephen’s has meant more than residence—it has meant belonging. From city excursions to mountain retreats, these shared journeys continue to shape the character of our boarding program and the memories of generations of Saints.
The Merano trip was another chapter in that enduring story
